Come out for The Eastern Door’s Spring Cleanup!

The snow has mostly left us, but the garbage underneath remains. Come out Friday and do your part to make Kahnawake clean again like superstar Brandi Meloche did last year. (Daniel J. Rowe, The Eastern Door)

This year’s Eastern Door Spring Cleanup, the 23rd edition, promises to be, in the words of that man with the orange-hair to the south many love to hate: YUUUUUUUUGE!

With so many participants waiting to join in on the action and help get our community ready for the next three seasons, hundreds of garbage bags will surely be collected by the many selfless volunteers.

“I hope for a day when we won’t have to cleanup after people who throw garbage onto their own streets and town, and don’t care for the environment, but we’re not there yet,” said TED editor/publisher Steve Bonspiel.

“But, looking on the bright side, there’s an army of people out there who want to pitch in and make a difference by getting their hands dirty.”

The Eastern Door is also partnering up with the Waste Management Department of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake, as they run a special campaign to encourage more cleanliness running right through cleanup day, on Friday, April 20.

The challenge began Wednesday, April 4, the deadline is April 29, and the rules are simple:

Choose a location in Kahnawake you feel needs cleaning, and then get out your camera – a before and after photo could win you a prize!

Post them at www.facebook.com/recyclinginkahnawake and you will be entered into a draw for one of two handmade backyard compost bins, one of two 80-litre garbage bins, among other prizes.

The draw will take place on Monday, April 30 on the Satketsko Morning Show with Brandon and Paul on K103 Radio.

“I sent personal, signed letters to the Mohawk Council chiefs and the feedback I got was close to half of them will be participating, so that’s encouraging,” said Bonspiel.

Pick a spot and clean it, it’s that simple, but before you do, stop by the Knights of Columbus parking lot from 7 a.m. to noon, and pick up your gloves, garbage bags, snacks and refreshments, rain or shine.

Together, we can make Kahnawake a cleaner place to live for everyone!
